Lava Flow Hike To The Kohala Waterfalls
Tour ID: BHFT-31
Duration: 5.5 hours
Location: Waikoloa, Big Island
Leaves from: Hawaii Forest & Trail Headquarters, and Waikoloa Queen's Marketplace
In Hawaiian, ''ola I ka wai a ka opua'' can be translated into ''there is life in the rain.'' There is no where else in Hawaii where the importance and story of water is more evident than on the lands of Kamehameha. The rain gives the land its spectacular landscape and plentiful waterfalls. The water continues to shape the breath taking valleys, streams, and cliffs while revealing the history and culture of Kohala.
The Drive: Begin the tour with a drive up the North Kona and Kohala coastlines, over lava flows from Mauna Loa, Mauna Kea, and the Kohala Mountains. Experience the contrast of the dry-side resort area from the lush green landscape of Kohala. From the shoreline you will be able to see splashing dolphins or even humpback whales if you come in the winter time. The drive will also take you through the plantation towns of Hawi and Kapaau. Not to mention the life-sized statue of King Kamehameha I. Following these sights, the bus will make a brief stop at the historic Kohala Mule Station for perhaps the most spectacular coastal views on the island. A short, bumpy drive over the private ranchland to the trailhead will end the bus ride.
The Adventure: Now comes the fun part! Step onto the same trail that was constructed in the early 1900's in order to bring water to the sugar cane fields. The Kohala Ditch Trail is not a terribly long trail, only 1.5 miles, but you will see tunnels blasted and carved from solid rock, walk over an aqueduct on two bridges, and learn the story of the 22 mile irrigation system. There are seven beautiful waterfalls along the trail and you will be able to take a refreshing dip in the last one. With its stunning mountain panoramas, green valleys and pasture lands, and abundant water, it is no wonder the Kohala Waterfall Adventure is such a popular way to experience Kohala's ''story of water.''
